Which kind of instrument is the densoon?
A wind instrument from the double reed woodwind category, just like its classic predecessor: the bassoon.
It is not an electronic instrument! It just uses mechatronics to provide the assisted fingering, but the sound and the emission is identical to the classic acoustic bassoon.
How to play it?
You simply blow into it, and it’s not just a joke: the densoon remains a real wind instrument!!
If you don’t know it, it’s best to train with the double reed embouchure first!

Then, everything depends on precisely following the tablature of the positions: have you seen that they are identical to that of the recorder you played in primary school?!

Using the same recorder fingering, has the densoon the same limited octaves extension?
Definitely not! The densoon is a bassoon, as a wind instrument: mouthing, timbre and extension; its 3 and a half octaves are quite the same!
Controlled by three octave selectors, in the same positions where the recorder octave hole is: actioned by the left hand thumb.
Where can I buy it?
In the next few weeks we will list the first stores where it will be possible to see, try and purchase your brand new densoon up close! In the meantime, if you are interested, contact us and we can reserve one of the very first densoons for you from production!
Who can play it?
Anyone who wants it!
You don’t have to be particularly tall, or short, or thin, or fat, or strong, or weak, for a densoon. You just have to have a great will to play it!
How much does it weight?
2,2 lb.
Substantially the same as the corresponding classic bassoon model, because, instead of traditional metal keys, there is the mechatronics kit which has an equivalent weight.
The first densoon available is made of synthetic material, stable in different climates and with a beautiful thundering voice!
Do I have to connect it to the electricity to have it work?
When using electronic devices, you obviously need power.
With densoon you can decide: to make it work with the 220V power supply, or with the battery pack, for greater freedom of movement!
Should I turn it off or disconnect it when I finish using it?
As with any other electronic device, it is recommended, because you avoid needlessly discharging the battery!
On the other hand, if connected to the electricity mains via power supply, by unplugging it you avoid the risk of any voltage fluctuations (thunderstorms, blackouts or other disasters)..
Do I also need to buy a reed?
A reed is already supplied with the instrument.
But we suggest you to buy at least one more as a spare: they can be very fragile, especially if they fall or are inadvertently hit.
There are cane reeds and plastic reeds: which should I use on the densoon?
Even classical cane reeds can be used on the densoon, but we recommend those made of synthetic material, ideal for ease of maintenance and immediacy of use!
Not surprisingly, you will find one in synthetic resin supplied.
How often should I change the reed?
Of course it depends on how frequently and for how long you play!
Like all materials, it will decay, sooner or later. Those made of bamboo cane, net of accidents, last on average a few weeks; those in synthetic material… months!
How do you clean the densoon?
Exactly like a classic bassoon!
It is good practice, every time you finish playing, to dismantle the instrument, put it back in its case, then dry the inside of the tubes with the pipe cleaners supplied or with swabs.
Should I also clean the reed? If yes, how?
It is advisable to do so!
When using a reed made of synthetic material, normally semi-transparent, you will notice that saliva residues are deposited with use, which solidify over time. All you need is a small pipe cleaner, like the ones pipe smokers usually have, to clean it effectively from the inside, using some water with it!
The same advice is true for cane reeds, might be more rarely.
It’s not only a matter of hygiene, it’s a matter of good sound as well!
